House Republicans Want to Shut Down Congress If They Don’t Get to Suppress Votes
House Republicans are threatening to refuse to pass any legislation the Senate sends their way until their GOP colleagues do Donald Trump’s bidding and jam through a bill that would make it more difficult for millions of Americans to vote... without achieving anything else.

To help us explain what is happening with the SAVE America Act, the Republican voter suppression bill that Donald Trump and most GOP lawmakers hope to push through Congress by any means necessary to better rig the midterms, we want you to imagine a mall parking lot.
If that seems weird, please just bear with us.
This parking lot, which operates independently from the mall, has many handicapped spots that are clearly marked with signs explaining that anybody using them illegally will be towed and fined. Still, every now and then, a car parks there. In most cases, it’s an honest mistake because the drivers just didn’t pay attention.
Fortunately, there are so many reserved spots that this has never forced a handicapped motorist to park in a regular spot. Furthermore, in virtually all cases, the drivers breaking the rules, inadvertently or not, have paid a heavy price for their transgression.
In other words, the system works as intended, handicapped drivers always find a spot, and violators are punished severely.
One day, however, the mall management changes, and the new CEO, inexplicably and without ever presenting any evidence, claims that non-handicapped drivers parking in handicapped spots are causing a huge problem. He demands that the board sign off on a plan to put up new signs saying the same thing that the old ones did.
In addition, upon entering the lot, he wants every driver to present a document saying that they have never illegally parked in a handicapped spot. And if they cannot provide that proof, they will be barred from using the lot at all.
To top it all off, the manager says that if the operator of the parking lot doesn’t make these changes, then he will close the mall.
While this may not be a perfect analogy, that is essentially what we are dealing with in the case of the SAVE America Act, a bill that “addresses” a problem that doesn’t exist, offers a fix that already does, and accomplishes nothing apart from making millions of Americans jump through some bureaucratic hoops that, in the worst case, may make it difficult if not impossible for them to vote.
That last part is the whole point of the legislation, of course. The real goal of the SAVE America Act is to protect the Republican majority in Congress and allow Donald Trump to escape any kind of accountability.
And to make sure that it passes, the president has said that he will no longer sign any other bills into law, and House Republicans are now threatening that they will not vote for any legislation that comes over from the Senate unless their GOP colleagues there use the most extreme tools at their disposal to force through the SAVE Act.
To our knowledge, never in the history of Congress has one party pushed so hard to pass a measure that achieves so little (at least with regard to its stated purpose).
It’s like the US dropping a nuclear bomb to claim an uninhabited island it already owns.
It doesn’t make sense, unless the true goal is something much more nefarious… like disenfranchising millions of Americans who are more likely to vote for Democrats than Republicans.
It is already clear that the 2026 midterms will be unlike any other election, with Donald Trump using all levers of the government to ensure that Republicans maintain control of Congress. This will include a massive voter suppression effort, as evidenced by the president’s efforts to get the GOP to change the rules of the Senate to pass the “SAVE America Act.”
Fortunately, every American has a vote. To ensure that yours is counted, go here to check your registration status. It only takes a few seconds.
Apart from that, we urge all Americans to get involved and make sure their family members and friends are registered as well. Democracy only works if everybody participates.
