World Migratory Bird Day 2026 to Spotlight Role of Community Science in Conservation (Maria)
The author writes, “On May 9, 2026, World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) will spotlight the important role of community science in the conservation of migratory birds. Under the theme ‘Every Bird Counts — Your Observations Matter!,’ the 2026 campaign will focus on how individual observations and participation in community science programs help generate knowledge that supports science, conservation, and policy-making across the world’s flyways. … WMBD is organized by an international educational, awareness-raising campaign that promotes conservation efforts.”
Ex-CIA Director Calls for Ousting Trump: ‘25th Amendment Was Written With Him in Mind’ (Reader Jim)
From The Guardian: “The former Central Intelligence Agency director John Brennan has added his name to growing calls for the president to be ousted on grounds that he is unfit for the job, arguing that the US constitution’s 25th amendment addressing involuntary removal from office was ‘written with Donald Trump in mind.’ Brennan, who served as head of the spy agency during Barack Obama’s presidency, told MS Now on Saturday that Trump’s recent volatile remarks about destroying Iranian civilization and the danger he posed to so many lives merited his removal from the Oval Office. ‘This person is clearly unhinged,’ he said. ‘I think the 25th amendment was written with Donald Trump in mind.’ Brennan added that Trump was too much of a liability to be allowed to continue to be commander-in-chief, with immense firepower at his disposal, including the US nuclear arsenal.”
Tribal Gas Stations Offer a Reprieve From High Prices During Iran War (Reader Steve)
From the AP: “Junelle Lewis was on the hunt for a reprieve from Seattle-area gas prices driven high by the Iran war when an app on her phone gave her the answer: the Tulalip Reservation north of the city, almost half an hour from her home. She didn’t hesitate. ‘I purposely drove here just for the gas,’ Lewis said while filling up her Chevrolet Suburban at the Tulalip Market this week for $4.84 a gallon (3.8 liters) — about 75 cents less than prices near home. ‘Gas is ridiculous. But I have found, honestly, over the years, this gas station specifically is cheaper than a lot around here. Probably the cheapest.’ Lewis isn’t the only driver who has discovered that some of cheapest fuel can be found on Native American reservations.”
‘Climate Gaslighting’: How Fossil Fuel Giants Have Quietly Abandoned Their Net Zero Pledges (Laura)
The author writes, “Oil majors have been accused of ‘quietly abandoning’ their climate pledges in an attempt to justify the continued use of polluting fossil fuels. New research from Clean Creatives, a project for climate-conscious PR and advert professionals, has tracked how Big Oil has been ‘systemically’ changing its narrative over the last four years – despite repeated warnings around the planet’s warming. The report, titled ‘Toxic Accounts: From Greenwashing to Gaslighting,’ analyses more than 1,800 pieces of campaign material from fossil fuel giants BP, Shell, ExxonMobil, and Chevron between 2020 and 2024. This includes paid advertisements across social media sites such as Facebook, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram — as well as TV ads, library archives, press releases, investor communications and executive speeches.”
Human Evolution May Be Undergoing a Major Shift Right Before Our Eyes (Sean)
The author writes, “A seismic shift in the selection pressures acting on humans may have brought us to a major turning point in our evolutionary journey. According to multiple teams of scientists, human culture — technology, medicine, and our remarkable collaborative problem-solving skills — may now be shaping human evolution more than environmental pressures and the limitations of our bodies. This is because the solutions we invent to make our lives easier, from central heating to contact lenses, can solve biological challenges far faster than evolution can, reducing the pressure for genetic adaptation.”
First ‘Cloud Jaguar’ Spotted in 10 Years Sparks Hope in Honduras (Dana)
From CNN: “ Camera traps have photographed a jaguar high up in the Honduran Sierra del Merendón mountain range, the first time the big cat has been detected there in a decade. In images shared exclusively with CNN, the lone male, known as a ‘cloud jaguar,’ was spotted on February 6, about 2,200 meters up in high-altitude forest, a positive signal for the Central American nation attempting an environmental turnaround. Jaguars have lost 49% of their historic range in the Americas, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The largest population lives in Amazonia, but all other populations are classified as endangered or critically endangered. In Honduras jaguars are protected, though they face challenges.”
