Most Americans have heard of Flint, Michigan, and its ongoing lead water contamination disaster. But the small 2.1-square-mile neighborhood of Watts, located in South Central Los Angeles, might be the latest iteration in a countrywide infrastructure crisis that is primarily affecting minorities and poverty-stricken communities.
Last week WhoWhatWhy featured an article called “Watts: Another Flint?” from Dick Russell, author of Horsemen of the Apocalypse: The Men Who Are Destroying Life on Earth — And What It Means for Our Children.
In his piece Russell explained how a billion-dollar housing redevelopment project — with the backing of Big Real Estate and prominent politicians — is steamrolling over an industrially poisoned ground, without due recognition of the potential hazards and future health problems this mess will create.
Recently Russell talked with RT’s Watching the Hawks to explain the dilemma facing Watts today. For more, see the below video.
