New Documentary on Cuba Embargo — WWW Exclusive (Excerpt 3 of 4)
Excerpt III: An Illegal and Immoral Embargo
On the occasion of President Barack Obama’s historic visit to Havana, WhoWhatWhy is pleased to present these exclusive excerpts of a compelling new documentary on the history of Cuban-American relations and the embargo.
On many occasions, the United Nations has (nearly unanimously) condemned the US embargo of Cuba. Blocking food or medicine from reaching the island is not just a violation of humanitarian law but also the action of a bully.
More than that, the embargo has proven to be completely ineffective, which probably has something to do with the US being the only country that enforces it. Trying to deprive Cubans of essential goods has not forced regime change in over half a century — yet one administration after another has insisted on continuing this losing strategy.
The only thing the embargo has done is to cause hardship for Cubans not called Fidel Castro. Many of them have tried to escape his regime — many of them succeeded but many of them lost their lives.
The third excerpt of this documentary tells the astonishing story of a failed policy, its background and its brutal effects.
