Obama’s Military-Force Resolution Sets the Stage for a New Era of Imperialism
Michael T. Klare laments the inability of the United States to learn the lessons of history. In this instance, it’s a costly blind spot regarding America’s “imperial overstretch” into Vietnam and the second coming of interventionism under George W. Bush. Klare criticizes Obama’s push for a reboot of the Authorization for Use of Military Force, which turns America’s military strategy into shampoo instructions: “Rinse, Repeat.”
Netanyahu’s Speech to Congress, Abridged
Didn’t have the time (or the stomach) to watch Bibi bang the drums along the Potomac? Luckily, the folks at National Journal have cut down the text of Netanyahu’s speech into five mostly digestible paragraphs. It was a well-crafted, hyperbole-filled tongue-lashing of “evil Persian Potentates” who, according to Bibi, make Iran the Number One Enemy of everything that is good and decent in the world. He was showered with applause and whooping cheers by attendees, but panned by Democratic leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), the White House and anyone familiar with his history of bad predictions.
Petraeus Reaches Plea Deal Over Giving Classified Data to Lover
Apparently, Gen. Petraeus is pretty good at whispering sweet nothings. First it was to mistress Paula Broadwell. And now it’s prosecutors at the Department of Justice, who he was able to talk into a sweet plea deal for passing classified info to the comely Miss Broadwell. Among the sweet somethings he gave her were classified “black books” loaded with handwritten notes, war strategy, intelligence capabilities, and the names of covert officers. But the silver-tongued devil convinced the DOJ to drop the charge down to a misdemeanor. It’s good to be the General.
After Cleveland police shot a 12-year-old boy to death, the City of Cleveland is shooting itself in the foot. In court documents, the city defended killing Tamir Rice because he failed “to exercise due care to avoid injury” and was responsible for any “injuries, losses and damages” he suffered. After an immediate backlash, Mayor Frank Jackson quickly called the city’s response to the Rice family’s lawsuit “insensitive” and “poorly worded.” Ya’ think?!

Independents Outnumber Both Democrats and Republicans in 44 of 50 States
Sick and tired of the two-party system? Well, you are not alone. According to The American Values Atlas produced by the Public Religion Research Institute, there are only six states where self-identified Republicans or Democrats outnumber independents. Although this trend has been building for the better part of a decade, it still hasn’t translated into a viable third party … yet.

New Study Says Climate Change Helped Spark Syrian Civil War
From 2006 – 2010, Syria suffered a crippling drought in its “breadbasket” region. And that drought led to a “climate migration” from farming lands into urban areas. That created tinderbox conditions the Syrian government sparked into a bloody conflagration in 2011. That’s the conclusion of a new study published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academies of Science. While the study doesn’t directly blame climate change for the war, it does portend a future of human-induced global warming creating droughts, destabilizing population dislocations and, therefore, more resource-related conflicts.
