Last week a Federal Public Defender in Charlotte, North Carolina posted the following message on Facebook:
I never vent about work online, but some things must be said. The following were literally the very last words out of my mouth this morning before sitting down at the end of a bond hearing at which the government argued that my client’s place of birth and remaining family connections made her a “risk of flight” because of “ties to a foreign nation”:
“Your Honor, I am disappointed to hear that the representative of the United States is unaware that Puerto Rico is part of this country.”
