Prominent Republicans have reacted to Donald Trump’s felony conviction in a variety of ways… none of them is sane or makes any sense at all.
Think of what happens to a beehive that loses its queen. In that case, all the other bees start buzzing loudly, a cacophony that experts refer to as “queenless roar.”
That is essentially what we are getting from top Republicans right now, who are acting like chickens with their heads cut off.
They have been so conditioned to defend anything that Trump does that they are now doing so instinctively… without any rhyme or reason.
Here are some examples of what that looks like:
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis assured the nation that the former president has not yet lost his voting rights because they had not yet been stripped from him in New York.
But even if that were to happen, don’t worry, because DeSantis is on the case.
“Given the absurd nature of the New York prosecution of Trump, this would be an easy case to qualify for restoration of rights per the Florida Clemency Board, which I chair,” he wrote on Twitter. “The bottom line is that Donald Trump’s vote this November will be one of millions that demonstrate Florida is now a solid Republican state!”
Great to know, governor!
Just a couple of questions: What, exactly, is this absurd nature you are referring to? Is it the fact that a jury of regular Americans unanimously voted to convict Trump? Because that’s how the criminal justice system is supposed to work.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (LA) also had some things to say. He believes the Supreme Court should “step in” when Trump appeals the verdict.
What’s crazy about both reactions is that Republicans are the ones complaining about the weaponization and politicization of the system, yet both of these proposals are just that.
Each of them wants to use their power and influence (or that of a friendly entity like the Supreme Court) to bypass the regular system in order to benefit Trump.
Of course, this kind of irony seems to be lost on them. And who knows if the Supreme Court would even be of help after Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas recuse themselves. LOL, just kidding, of course; they wouldn’t.
Over on the Senate side, Republicans vowed to take more direct action right away.
Ten GOP lawmakers — among them the usual suspects like Coach Tuberville (AL) and wannabe vice presidents JD Vance (OH) and Marco Rubio (FL) — signed a pledge to bring most Senate business to a halt.
“The White House has made a mockery of the rule of law and fundamentally altered our politics in un-American ways,” their pledge states. “As a Senate Republican conference, we are unwilling to aid and abet this White House in its project to tear this country apart.”
What are you talking about? The White House hasn’t done a damn thing.
Among the steps this group of clowns wants to take are to block political and judicial appointees and to “not allow any increase to non-security related funding for this administration, or any appropriations bill which funds partisan lawfare.”
Again, what are you talking about? Why would you try to make the work of the Department of Justice more difficult after it declined to charge Trump with the crimes he has now been convicted of in state court?
Of course, in the MAGAverse, all of this makes sense.
One of the signatories of this pledge, Sen. Josh Hawley (MO), went on Fox News to voice his indignation and summed up his appearance as follows: “Joe Biden can’t win a fair election so he’s trying to rig it — by throwing his opponent in jail.”
A quick fact check: Biden actually has won a fair election (by seven million votes), upon which Trump staged a coup and an insurrection on January 6. Hawley may remember that day because he riled up the insurrectionists with a raised fist.
Also, nobody has been thrown in jail. In fact, it seems likely that Trump won’t head to prison because that supposedly biased judge will have better sense than that.
Still, all of these reactions are deeply troubling because they do not bode well for the rest of the year, and what Republicans are willing to do to appease their insane leader.
They should take note that there is another way: Bees respond to their queenless roar by replacing the missing queen… which makes them a lot smarter than Republicans.
