Editor’s Note: Imagining a speech Joe Biden could give today if his purpose were to save his presidency, his reputation, and the country.
My Fellow Americans:
I’m famously stubborn, but I am not immune to facts. I know when it is time to come, and time to go.
You saw it, and I saw it. It is time for me to go.
And that’s why I am announcing today an immediate plan to reopen the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate nomination process.
I’ve chosen a diverse panel of some of the smartest, most decent people around and asked them to identify a half dozen individuals of varying backgrounds who would make a great president.
Once those tapped confirm they’re interested in the job, we’ll immediately set up a process with a series of debates so the public can get a sense of them, what they stand for, and how well they present themselves.
By the time the Democratic National Convention opens in Chicago August 19, all of these candidates — and anyone else who wishes to be considered — will have had a good month and a half to make their case.
And, no matter who the public decides it wants, that person will already be far, far more capable, honest, and admirable than the presumed GOP nominee could ever be.
I admit this was not what I had hoped for. But it is what is best for America.
And that’s the most important thing. Thank you for giving me the honor of serving. I’m honored now to pass on the torch.
