At first glance, it would seem as though Republicans with a Hunter Biden fetish (i.e., everybody in the House, plenty of senators, and the entire right-wing echo chamber) would be thrilled when Attorney General Merrick Garland announced that he would make US Attorney David Weiss a special counsel in the investigation of the president’s wayward son. But, predictably, they all immediately began whining about that, too.

Upon a closer examination, that makes a lot of sense.

Here is why: In a statement announcing the move, Garland noted that it was Weiss, an appointee of former President Donald Trump who began the probe of President Joe Biden’s son in 2018 and has continued to lead the prosecution, who was the one asking to be elevated to special counsel.

The attorney general added that, in light of the “extraordinary circumstances” of the case, granting Weiss broader authority is “in the public interest.”

And that, in a nutshell, explains why Republicans are now complaining.

The thing is that they do not care at all about the “public interest.” That’s not what any of this is about.

In an effort to score political points and to distract from the fact that their champion is a thrice-indicted crook, all the GOP wants is to use the black sheep of the president’s family to make unfounded accusations about a “two-tiered justice system” and pretend that Joe Biden himself is involved in a “bribery scheme” for which they have no provided any evidence.

Then, they want to take their “findings” on Fox News, cry wolf for the umpteenth time, and hope that nobody notices that all this is just a house of cards.

Right now, that all works because, when it comes to Hunter Biden “investigations,” House Republicans are the only game in town. That allows them to overpromise, underdeliver, and get the consumers of conservative media in a tizzy by pretending they are always on the verge of breaking a Watergate-like scandal wide open.

If that’s the kind of con you are running, then the very last thing you want is a special counsel mucking around, perhaps looking at the same set of facts and coming to a vastly different conclusion.

And that explains why Republicans were not thrilled at all about Garland’s announcement.

“This action by Biden’s DOJ cannot be used to obstruct congressional investigations or whitewash the Biden family corruption,” stated House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (CA).

That was a common theme among GOP lawmakers, many of whom tried to paint the appointment of a special counsel as an act of obstruction.

Investigator-in-chief Rep. James Comer (R-KY) also seemed pretty sad and outraged (you can read the entire statement for yourself, but be advised that you have to speak MAGAnese to understand what he is talking about).

These statements — and there seems to be one from every House Republican — make it very clear that there is nothing that will make these guys happy.

At least not anything that can be achieved with the “evidence” they have presented so far.
