Mike Johnson’s potential influence on foreign policy could be disastrous if his religious beliefs — particularly those regarding the end times and the Rapture — inform his decisions as speaker.
Johnson might have an interest in Middle Eastern conflicts escalating, aligning with prophecies about a war involving Russia and Arab states invading Israel, which some Christians believe precedes the Rapture.
The worry is that such beliefs could lead to real-world actions, like responding to conflicts in ways that could provoke larger wars — fulfilling the conditions for the prophesied events.
For some of us, Johnson allayed this fear when he shepherded funding for Ukraine through the House, but he seems unpredictable, and his connections with Israel’s far right are disturbing. We shall be watching him closely.
