The Miami Herald reported a list of Jeffrey Epstein’s assets as filed by his estate in Virgin Islands probate court. Not included in the inventory was a 50 percent share in American Yacht Harbor — a 127-slip marina in St. Thomas — co-owned with Island Capital, whose CEO is developer Andrew L. Farkas. Their vision was to create a destination for mega yachts, which are too large to dock at a conventional marina. The filing noted that Epstein’s artwork, collectibles, jewelry, and watches had not yet been appraised. His estate is now officially valued at $636.1 million.

It’s no secret that in 2008, Jeffrey Epstein received a controversial plea agreement — in which only one witness testified against him during a closed-door grand jury proceeding, that remains sealed to this day. The FBI had been investigating Epstein but once the plea agreement was signed, all their efforts had to be halted. ABC has now reported that federal agents in Florida knew about a New York victim back then and had subpoenaed her to testify, but Epstein’s deal was signed before she had the chance to tell her story. When New York opened their investigation last year, she was contacted again.

A lawyer for Jeffrey Epstein’s estate, Bennet Moskowitz, stated in NY court that Virgin Islands Attorney General Denise George, has made it impossible for the estate to pay even basic expenses. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Denise George accused the estate of using nondisclosure agreements with Epstein’s victims and former employees to “conceal the criminal activity of Epstein and his associates who are still there.” She wants the estate to release employees from their NDAs in order to cooperate with law enforcement. George also said the estate has not submitted a verified inventory of Epstein’s assets, as required by law, and the identity of members of “the 1953 Trust” — to whom he left his wealth — has been redacted and remains unknown.

A 15.5 million dollar deposit to a Virgin Islands bank owned by Epstein, Southern Country International, was received in December, the New York Times reported. Epstein’s lawyers said some of it was an error, but only about 2.6 million of the total deposit has been returned to Epstein’s estate, records show. Presiding Judge Carolyn Hermon-Purcell, who is in charge of distributing Epstein’s assets in the Virgin Islands, ordered his estate produce documents to explain the transfers.

Dismantling and dispensing Jeffrey Epstein’s estate is becoming a more complicated endeavor. In a January 23 court filing, Virgin Islands Attorney General Denise George directed attention to the estate executor’s potential conflict of interest. She filed a motion in the Virgin Islands superior court to intervene with his asset management and requested the court allow her to help.
In response to numerous public information requests, Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg released material online — including audio files, videos, and documents — related to the 2008 “sweetheart plea agreement.” In his official statement, Aronberg points out that Epstein’s case happened years before he took office and that he does not have access to the grand jury transcripts that have also been requested.
Correction notice, 2/10/2020: The word “potential” has been inserted before the phrase “conflict of interest” in the paragraph above regarding the actions of Denis George.

Ghislaine Maxwell’s email address was accidentally revealed in August and subsequently hacked by cybercriminals. This became public knowledge in December when the hack was used as an argument in court, cited as one of many possible repercussions from unsealing a new trove of court documents.
Meanwhile, L. Brands CEO and former Epstein client Leslie Wexner declined to disclose with ABC News the extent of Epstein’s alleged embezzlement of Wexner’s finances — Epstein served as Wexner’s personal financial advisor for over 15 years. Billionaire hedge-funder and former Epstein associate Glenn Dubin decided to retire, he told Reuters on Friday. And at a press conference regarding victims of human and sex trafficking, US attorney Geoffrey S. Berman told a reporter that Prince Andrew has offered “zero cooperation” with the FBI‘s investigation into Epstein.

US Virgin Islands Attorney General Denise George filed a lawsuit against Jeffrey Epstein’s estate that is seeking assets including two islands (Little St. James & Great St. James) and numerous shell companies that officials believe acted as a front for his sex trafficking enterprise. The lawsuit alleges that Epstein and his associates used fraudulent modeling visas to transport girls across state and international borders, then monitored their location and availability using a computer database. Ms. George said Epstein was collecting information about girls as young as 11 years old but has not pointed to any action after 2005. This is the first lawsuit filed against Epstein by a government entity and the first filed in jurisdiction of his legal permanent residence.

Tuesday, January 7Just when we thought Jeffrey Epstein might be fading from the headlines, 60 Minutes rekindled the public’s interest in this controversial case. WhoWhatWhy has posted this review of their story: Revelations on Epstein’s Death Lead to New Speculation. The 60 Minutes report, on Epstein’s suicide, includes some details from his autopsy. They discuss findings with forensic pathologist Michael Baden, who has had a long career but is also considered a bit controversial. Baden revealed a new point: “The wound straight across his neck is more common when a victim is strangled by a wire or a cord … typically a hanging victim would have a mark just under the jawbone.” He further states that he believes the wrong noose was tagged as evidence. And, among compounding errors at MCC, no photograph was taken to document the position his body was found in, which would’ve helped to corroborate the manner of death. Although no one has been accused of a crime, Reuters revealed the FBI is officially looking into Ghislaine Maxwell and some others who may have helped facilitate Epstein’s illicit activities. Last week in White Plains federal court, it was revealed that the footage of Jeffrey Epstein’s first suicide attempt was missing; however, by late the following day, it had been found. Attorneys for Epstein’s former cellmate Nicholas Tartaglione were seeking the video in order to remove the death penalty, for his quadruple homicide charge, by proving he had acted heroically to save Epstein’s life.
Citing a lack of cooperation from the Department of Justice, the Committee on Oversight and Reform is seeking documents and other related material to explain why Epstein got preferential treatment leading up to the 2008 “sweetheart plea deal,” and why his victims were not informed, as required by law. They also want to hear testimony from officials involved in the agreement. It’s been requested they receive the documents by January 3.

Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein’s accusers, has claimed the FBI informed her of “credible death threats” against her. Earlier this month, she gave an interview with the BBC, recounting her alleged experiences with high-profile figures. In New York federal court, Giuffre is in a legal battle with Ghislaine Maxwell to unseal Epstein-related documents. The case stems from Giuffre’s defamation suit against Maxwell, over Maxwell having called Giuffre a liar. District Judge Loretta Preska’s decision in the matter is pending and highly anticipated.
Bill Mersey, Epstein’s former prison companion at MCC, gave an interview with the Daily Mail, detailing what they discussed while locked up. Mersey served on work detail as an “inmate companion,” a program for prisoners on suicide watch, and spent hours talking to Epstein prior to his death.

Nine new women filed a lawsuit against Jeffrey Epstein’s estate, alleging abuse that included acts as early as 1985. All are being represented by the same attorney, Jordan Merson, in Manhattan court. Meanwhile, the legal team for Epstein’s estate are seeking to have already-filed suits dismissed.
The potential for nuclear fallout — had Epstein cooperated in a federal investigation — continues to fuel suspicions and conspiracies surrounding what happened to him and what he may have been doing. In the ever-developing Epstein case, some headlines can be evocative, so be aware of the context and source of information being shared. Some stories might be rumor or hoax.

When Jeffrey Epstein’s charity lost its tax-exempt status, it provided the opportunity for Jeffrey to exaggerate his philanthropy, New York Times has reported. This was the very foundation that Epstein used to help recreate his public image after serving time in Florida for the procurement and solicitation of a minor.
British police announced they will not pursue charges against Ghislaine Maxwell or Prince Andrew, mostly because their indiscretions took place off British soil. The hunt for Ghislaine is heating up: last week, The Sun offered £10,000 for information on her whereabouts.

Two guards on duty the night of Jeffrey Epstein’s death have been charged in court for their role in failing to prevent it. It’s unusual for corrections officers to be indicted on criminal charges for what would otherwise be an internal citation. According to Jose Rojas, an official in the prison workers’ union, “Ms. Noel and Mr. Thomas were being made scapegoats for Mr. Epstein’s death — missing rounds and doctoring records were generally treated as policy violations, not as criminal matters.” Attorney General Barr called it “a perfect storm of screw-ups” in an interview with the Associated Press.
The life Prince Andrew was once accustomed to is now radically changing. On Sunday he announced he will be stepping down from all royal patronages and moving his office out of Buckingham Palace. He hopes it’s only temporary and that he’ll be able to resume after time. This stems primarily from the BBC interview and poor publicity the palace suffered as a result.

Mark Epstein told Fox News that his brother Jeffrey had strange bruises on his wrists and shoulder, so he requested the full autopsy report three months ago but still hasn’t received it, saying that the Department of Justice is “playing games” with him. Epstein says his only interest is learning the truth about what happened.
A right-wing muckraking outfit, Project Veritas, released a video of ABC journalist Amy Robach venting frustration over her interview with Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre three years prior that wasn’t reported at the time due to alleged threats from the British Royal family. The alleged whistleblower involved, Ashley Bianco, has since been fired from her new employer CBS after ABC told them to axe her, but Bianco says that she did not leak the video.

Prominent forensic pathologist Michael Baden voiced his opinion on Fox & Friends, saying Epstein’s injuries are more consistent with manual strangulation than suicide. Baden was hired in August by Jeffrey’s brother, Mark Epstein, to observe the autopsy. In an action in the Virgin Islands, alleged Epstein victim Jennifer Araoz is seeking to ensure that she can recoup damages from Epstein’s estate, claiming that Epstein and his lawyers “conspired … to fraudulently convey and hide assets from his victims, by transferring assets into a recently created Trust.” US District Judge Loretta Preska has ordered that attorney David Boies be replaced in Virginia Giuffre’s defamation suit against Alan Dershowitz.
Sky News reported briefly locating Ghislaine Maxwell and Jean-Luc Brunel, who disappeared from public shortly after Epstein’s arrest. In France, a sexual harassment complaint has been filed against modeling agent Jean-Luc Brunel, an associate of Epstein’s accused in the US of rape and of obtaining girls for Epstein. Jeffrey Epstein’s lawyers continue to push back against the conclusion that he committed suicide. According to NYU School of Law professor Stephen Gillers, suicide can be “introduced in court to show consciousness of guilt amounting to a confession.” A New York Magazine article explores other possible reasons for Epstein’s lawyers to challenge suicide as the cause of death. In addition, an interview with a former butler suggests that Epstein may have known in advance about his July arrest that would take place at Teterboro Airport.

MIT staff and professors submitted a letter to university President L. Rafael Reif, demanding to know the full extent of the institution’s professional, financial, and personal ties with Jeffrey Epstein. Also, more news has emerged from within the scientific community about the relationship between Epstein and science. “Nerd-tunnel vision” is what some have called the practice in which elite institutions ignored ethical questions about Epstein when accepting his donations.
Additional revelations will likely come later tonight, as NBC’s Dateline is set to air an interview with six of Epstein’s accusers and Michael Reiter, the former Palm Beach Chief of Police who oversaw the original investigation into Epstein.

The victims of Jeffrey Epstein have been denied their day in Florida court, as US District Judge Kenneth Marra upheld the controversial non-prosecution agreement from 2008. This new development means Epstein’s accusers have no further avenue for justice.
Meanwhile, controversy continues to swirl around Epstein’s ties to elite research universities. Students at MIT have been rallying to protest and demand immediate changes to the university’s funding practices; last Friday, students and faculty marched to MIT President Rafael Reif’s office to demand his resignation.

Another day, another elite institution caught up in the Jeffrey Epstein scandal. This time it’s Stanford University. The institution admitted to receiving and spending a $50,000 donation from Epstein on its physics department — two years before his arrest for soliciting prostitution from underage girls. Epstein’s fruitful giving also reached the Santa Fe Institute (SFI), located just a one-hour drive from his infamous New Mexico ranch. He donated a total of $275,000 to SFI throughout the years.
Meanwhile, a harrowing new tale has emerged of one victim’s attempt to escape her torture from so-called Pedophile Island, which she talks about in her interview. And more was revealed about private flights Epstein took, the underage girls he traveled with, and where they were possibly headed.

A month after the death of Jeffrey Epstein, various people are trying to cash in on his story. From podcasts to upcoming books, and now a Netflix series, Epstein’s life has inspired a variety of media deals with the goal of unpacking the mystery he once heavily guarded.
After MIT took a beating in the media, another prestigious university appears to be doing damage control. Harvard President Lawrence Bacow announced last night that the university has already launched an internal investigation into Epstein’s donations and his ties to staff.

As the debate over the suspicious circumstances of Jeffrey Epstein’s death has slowed down, reports on how he used his property in the US Virgin Islands continue to produce a variety of theories — including one that he built his secretive getaway as a hat-tip to ancient Egypt.
Investigations into Epstein’s alleged crimes continue in Europe, with French police urging victims and possible witnesses to step forward. In addition, after Epstein had pled guilty to soliciting prostitution from underage girls in 2008, he allegedly dined with leaders of Silicon Valley’s tech giants just three years later.

For each question answered about Jeffrey Epstein and his associates, new ones seem to arise. We now know that MIT’s Media Lab received hundreds of thousands of dollars from Epstein despite being aware of his 2008 sexual assault conviction.
Instead of choosing transparency, certain elite academic institutions worked behind the scenes to obscure their relationships with Epstein. His alleged ties to officials from schools like MIT and Brown University shed light on how far officials will go to conceal their scandalous relationships. Plus, Microsoft founder Bill Gates is denying reports that he was “directed” to donate $2 million to the Media Lab on behalf of Epstein.

The federal judge who presided over Jeffrey Epstein’s criminal case is feuding with a law professor over the decision to allow Epstein’s accusers to be heard in court. Judge Richard Berman is especially vexed that Fordham professor Bruce Green attacked him for the decision without disclosing that he was an “expert” for former Epstein lawyer Alan Dershowitz.
In the meantime, Loretta Preska, the judge overseeing the federal case against Epstein, ruled on the specific parameters that determine which of the currently sealed files can eventually be made public.
Things are also getting increasingly messy at MIT. While the university’s Media Lab founder, Nicholas Negroponte, defends the decision to accept donations from Epstein, the calls for the resignation (or firing) of Joichi Ito are growing louder.

Good news for Jeffrey Epstein’s victims who are still seeking justice: The names of hundreds of persons associated with the deceased billionaire pedophile could be made public in the near future, according to Ghislaine Maxwell’s lawyer.
Bad news for people who knew of the alleged crimes or participated: A judge is expected to rule soon on unsealing more court documents that would shed light on Epstein’s web of connections.
In other news, the New York Times is reporting on how Epstein recruited young girls at NYC dance studios —his “hunting ground.” Two victims came forward to allege that Epstein used other women to recruit dancers and convince them to come to his Florida mansion.

The FBI is examining two broken cameras that were positioned outside Jeffrey Epstein’s NYC jail cell. Odd circumstances like that could explain why only one in three Americans believe he died by suicide, according to a new poll by Emerson College.
Although a NYC judge officially closed the criminal investigation into Epstein’s alleged sex crimes, the judge made sure his accusers got to give their (powerful) testimony. Plus, six House Democrats have written to Attorney General William Barr, demanding more information about Epstein’s 2008 “sweetheart deal” with federal prosecutors in Florida.

Jeffrey Epstein’s lawyers are back with claims that their former client died by murder rather than by suicide. Some of Epstein’s accusers have even raised suspicions about the circumstances of the wealthy financier and registered sex offender’s death.
Democratic voters are also split on the circumstances of Epstein’s death, says a new poll showing division between Sens. Bernie Sanders’s (I-VT) and Elizabeth Warren’s (D-MA) supporters. Some House Dems even renewed calls for Congress to look into Epstein’s 2008 “sweetheart deal” with federal prosecutors, and his apparent suicide. In a letter yesterday Rep. Lois Frankel, co-chairwoman of the Democratic Women’s Caucus, and more than 40 House members, called on multiple committees to investigate.

Jeffrey Epstein could bribe, threaten, and intimidate journalists, which explains why his alleged sex trafficking remained a secret for years. His philanthropy continues to inflict damage. And now foreign prosecutors are launching their own investigations.
The scientific community is also experiencing turbulence after multiple reports connect the powerful Massachusetts Institute of Technology to Epstein. Two scholars at MIT will step down after it was reported that Epstein secretly donated $800,000 to the research university’s renowned Media Lab.

Jeffrey Epstein’s death has caused a lot of collateral damage, as institutions must now explain why they accepted donations from him. More details concerning the alleged sex trafficker continue to emerge — not only did he leave a massive $577 million to a mysterious trust, he signed a will just two days before his death.
Prosecutors say they will close their criminal investigation into Epstein, but the legal battles continue. At least three women have filed a lawsuit against his estate, claiming he abused them before his 2007 sexual assault plea deal.

The Epstein saga grows even more complex, raising questions about what actually happened to the wealthy sexual predator. An autopsy reveals broken bones in Jeffrey Epstein’s neck, which some say could be an indication of foul play. New twists emerge in the debate over whether Epstein should have been on suicide watch. And, in related news, Epstein’s case has sparked broader debates around the age of consent and the term “underage woman.”
