Coronavirus May Never Go Away ; We Have Seen the ‘Outside Agitator’ and He Is Us ; and More Picks
Coronavirus May Never Go Away, Even With a Vaccine (Russ)
The authors write, “A vaccine — while crucial to our response — is not likely to eradicate the disease, experts say. Challenges to vaccination are already becoming clear, including limited supply, anti-vaccine opposition and significant logistical roadblocks. … Communities should be thinking about installing doors that don’t require grasping a handle, and re-engineering traffic signals so pedestrians don’t have to push crosswalk buttons, said Eleanor J. Murray, an epidemiologist at Boston University. In coming years … families may have to make diagnostic tests routine ahead of visits to grandparents. Once-mocked work cubicles of a bygone era may become the rage again, replacing open-floor plans found in many offices.”
US Police Have Attacked Journalists More Than 110 Times Since May 28 (DonkeyHotey)
From Nieman Lab: “Although in some incidents it is possible the journalists were hit or affected accidentally, in the majority of the cases we have recorded the journalists are clearly identifiable as press, and it is clear that they are being deliberately targeted.”
White Nationalist Group Posing as Antifa Called for Violence on Twitter (DonkeyHotey)
The authors write, “A Twitter account claiming to belong to a national ‘antifa’ organization and pushing violent rhetoric related to ongoing protests has been linked to the white nationalist group Identity Evropa, according to a Twitter spokesperson. The spokesperson said the account violated the company’s platform manipulation and spam policy, specifically the creation of fake accounts. Twitter suspended the account after a tweet that incited violence.”
Bay Area Activists Fear Trump’s Targeting of Antifa Is an Excuse to Go After Them (Reader Steve)
The author writes, “Organizers in the Bay Area, long a hub for left-leaning activism … say Trump is trying to delegitimize the [recent] demonstrations, many of which have been peaceful. ‘It is an attempt to criminalize and indict people who are standing up to injustice,’ said Carroll Fife, director of the Oakland/San Francisco Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment and a longtime Bay Area organizer.”
We Have Seen the ‘Outside Agitator’ and He Is Us (Chris C.)
The author writes, “The problems with the ‘outside agitator’ narrative aren’t limited to its literal falsity. … Fundamentally, the very concept … is incoherent in the context of nationwide protests over a nationwide problem.”
No Deal Brexit Threat Looms Over Pandemic-Ravaged UK Economy (Chris C.)
From Bloomberg: “Chances are growing that the U.K. will end the post-Brexit transition period on Dec. 31 without a free trade agreement in place — spelling turmoil for businesses. Instead of postponing its final parting with the bloc because of the coronavirus, the U.K. government has so far ruled out any delay. That may be, critics say, because Brexiters calculate the cost of leaving without a deal will be obscured by the far more extensive damage wreaked by the virus.”
Thanks to Physics, This Chocolate Is Iridescent — and Safe to Eat (Mili)
The author writes, “To make the chocolate, [Samy] Kamkar created a mushroom-shaped mold with multiple ridges micrometers apart. He tempered the chocolate, poured it into the mold and then put it in a vacuum chamber to prevent air bubbles on the surface.”
