How a Shift in the Gulf Stream Could Signal Collapse of Major Ocean Current System (Maria)
The author writes, “Changes in the Gulf Stream, a strong ocean current in the Atlantic, could serve as an early warning of the imminent collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). The AMOC is a massive system of ocean currents that acts as a conveyor belt, moving heat from the tropics to the North Atlantic. The part of this system that flows along the U.S. East Coast then east toward Europe is the Gulf Stream. Scientists are concerned that if the AMOC were to collapse, it could trigger drastic climate shifts.”
America’s Holy War in Iran (Dana)
The author writes, “For roughly half a century, a certain strain of American evangelical theology has taught millions of believers to read conflicts like Trump’s war with Iran not simply as geopolitics in action but as prophecy unfolding in real time. I was one of them.”
Rep. Kevin Kiley Leaves GOP To Become an Independent, Complicating Johnson’s Majority (DonkeyHotey)
The author writes, “Rep. Kevin Kiley of California said Monday he was immediately leaving the Republican Party to become an independent. … The move complicates House Speaker Mike Johnson’s narrow majority, though Kiley said he plans to caucus with the Republican Party ‘for the remainder of this term.’ ‘That is how I was elected to begin this term,’ he said. But Kiley would not say whether he would be a reliable vote for Johnson during procedural votes. Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, can afford to lose one vote, if all members are present and voting.”
The People Standing Between Students and ICE? Teachers. (Sean)
From The 19th: “With the number of people held in detention up by as much as 75 percent since President Donald Trump returned to office, educators are not only teaching but also tending to students’ emotional needs and offering vital support — groceries, car rides, rent money — to their immigrant families. They are contending with the daily impact of a decision by the Trump administration to lift longstanding protections for schools and other so-called ‘sensitive locations’ against federal law enforcement, which has left them vulnerable to ICE operations.”
When DOGE Unleashed ChatGPT on the Humanities (Russ)
The author writes, “Documents show how A.I. was used to cancel most previously approved grants by the National Endowment for the Humanities as the agency embraced President Trump’s agenda.”
The Tijuana River Sewage Crisis Is One of America’s Longest-Lasting Public Health Calamities (Laura)
From Sierra: “I stand at the mouth of the Tijuana River — a Stygian cesspool that flows 120 miles north from Baja California, through the working-class city of Tijuana with its hundreds of factories manufacturing gadgets for American consumers — before crossing the US-Mexico border. The river meanders through south San Diego’s frontline communities and Southern California’s largest estuary before emptying into the Pacific Ocean on what would otherwise be one of San Diego’s iconic beaches, famous for surfers and sunsets. … This beach has been closed for more than 1,500 days due to fecal bacteria creating unsafe conditions for surfers, beachcombers, and casual visitors alike.”
Seattle Clinic Gets Homeless Youth Engaged in Care by Treating Their Pets (Reader Steve)
From The Seattle Times: “The last time Melody was at the drop-in clinic at New Horizons Youth Shelter in Belltown, the veterinary students couldn’t even get her out of her carrier because she was too afraid. But this afternoon, the white and brown tabby might as well have been a different cat. She stood calmly on the exam table, happily licking a tube of meat paste. … It was a win in multiple ways. With Melody up to date on vaccines, her young owner was also at ease and able to move on to the human side of the visit, which involved a check on her physical and mental health. This is how the One Health Clinic works.”
