While the rest of America was thinking about the Super Bowl, Donald Trump had something else on his mind: Why won’t Taylor Swift endorse him?
As the Kansas City Chiefs came back to win a thrilling game that captivated the nation, the former president’s main focus was on how disloyal the megastar is.
As part of his personality disorders, Trump values loyalty above all… Mind you, that means anybody for whom he has conceivably ever done anything owes him fealty. Of course, this isn’t a two-way street because the former president has a habit of abandoning even those people who had displayed great loyalty to him once they stop serving a purpose.
On Sunday, as global TV audiences were glued to their screens to watch only the second Super Bowl to go into overtime, Trump felt it was time for Swift to declare her allegiance to him.
The relationship between the extremely popular singer and Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce was a main storyline of the NFL season, and she was omnipresent Sunday night after having rushed back from a concert in Japan to watch the game in person.
So what better time to make a ham-handed appeal for her endorsement?
Specifically, Trump believes Swift owes him loyalty because he “made her rich” by signing into law a bill that would force streaming services to more fairly compensate performers: “I signed and was responsible for the Music Modernization Act for Taylor Swift and all other Musical Artists.”
If you are familiar with this particular piece of legislation, then you will know that it was a bipartisan effort many years in the making that passed unanimously. Therefore, Trump was not responsible for anything.
But the former president is not one to let the facts get in the way of some idea he has concocted in his head.
Ultimately, this is all about one thing: the massive influence Swift wields with her millions of (mostly young) fans.
Setting aside whether or not it makes sense that the endorsement of any performer should carry any weight in politics, there is no denying that Swift holds sway over her fans. For example, when she encouraged young people to sign up to vote, tens of thousands of them followed her call. And if you know anything about whom Republicans want to vote (or not vote), then you will also know that young people are very low on the list of approved voters.
Therefore, it makes sense that Trump and his surrogates are concerned over the impact the singer could have. In his trademark not-so-subtle manner, the former president then gets to the point: “Joe Biden didn’t do anything for Taylor, and never will. There’s no way she could endorse Crooked Joe Biden, the worst and most corrupt President in the History of our Country, and be disloyal to the man who made her so much money.”
Democratic strategists, on the other hand, are salivating over the prospect of Trump picking a fight with Swift. For now, the former president seems to understand that this is not a fight he wants to wade into. Therefore, he concluded his Truth Social post with some (kinda) kind words for Kelce: “Besides that, I like her boyfriend, Travis, even though he may be a Liberal, and probably can’t stand me!”
We do hope that, like the rest of the world, Trump still managed to enjoy the game after getting this off his chest.
