In an uncertain world, the sense of stability that the US military offers appeals to kids not yet old enough to do much else in life. And that’s the point.

Why would the same government that doesn’t allow a 17-year-old kid to rent a car or order a beer at a bar allow them to enlist in the United States military and carry a gun into combat, where they can kill and be killed? Shockingly, there’s no contradiction at all.
