New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani recently announced his support for the Delivery Protection Act that is pending before the City Council. The act would require companies that use gig delivery workers to hire them with all the benefits of employees.

The gig economy is a scam that allows employers to take advantage of workers. Companies like Jeff Bezos’s Amazon hire subcontractors that employ gig workers, but those workers’ time and activities are assigned and monitored by Amazon. This system absolves Amazon from responsibility for treating these workers like legal “employees” while still giving the company control over their pay and time.

The proposed NYC Delivery Protection Act is one of the first instances of this type of legislation. You can bet all of the gig-worker-dependent corporations will fight this to the bitter end.
