Trump Lies About Voter Fraud, Which Is Vanishingly Rare Outside of His Head

Voter Fraud is a myth promoted by Republicans for use as an excuse to suppress votes and “legally” steal elections. 

They claim that there is massive voter fraud, where millions of “illegals” are voting in US elections. They never explain what the immigrant’s incentive is for doing this — while the most obvious reason for not doing this is the risk of going to jail, or of deportation. It is illegal for noncitizens to vote. 

More importantly, there is no evidence of this happening on a scale that would alter the outcome of our elections. The small list of perpetrators of voter fraud includes Republicans and a few miscreants carrying out “special ops” of their own design, and a few others who thought they were legal and voted by mistake. With millions of ballots cast, it is in no way surprising or suspect to find a few such mistakes made.

President Donald Trump loves to deploy this myth. He started early in his political career. He has been claiming that elections are rigged since he lost to Ted Cruz in the 2016 Iowa caucuses. It is a standard authoritarian move. Claim elections are rigged so that you can step in at the last minute to invalidate anti-Trump ballots. 

Trump knows that more Democrats prefer to vote by mail because it allows them to vote and not miss any work. And in some states, like California, the ballot can be very long and complicated, making it much more comfortable to fill out your ballots around the kitchen table while you have access to the internet to research each item. The fact that Democrats tend to vote absentee is the only reason he disparages this voting method. The fact that he votes by mail himself should undermine his stance, but reality is ignored by the MAGA faithful these days. 

We can look forward to a season of suppression like nothing we have seen before.

Watch for:

• Database matching and caging lists resulting in voter purging from the rolls 
• Unreasonable limitations on early voting and absentee voting
• Increasingly restrictive and burdensome ID requirements
• Reduced voting locations and reduction in hours that produce long lines
• Promoting misinformation about voting times and locations
• Putting doppelgangers on ballots to confuse voters
• Stationing ICE officers in cities during elections to intimidate voters
• Warning people they might go to jail if they are accused of voting illegally
• Using the FBI to intimidate voter engagement groups
• And on and on…
